Manchester City are in the process of splashing the cash in the summer, according to widespread reports. Pep Guardiola had overseen a difficult start to the campaign for City, who are now back as title contenders. However, the poor start to the season comes as a warning to the club, who are ready to respond with a budget of more than £200 million, according to the Sun.
Despite this massive budget, the club are also looking to reduce their existing wage bill. One of the highest earners in the squad happens to be Sergio Aguero, who is making around £260,000 per week. Yet, the forward only has he few months left on his contract which he signed in 2018. The 32-year-old has been one of the important players in the club’s history. Aguero is the all-time leading scorer for City, but there is no doubt that he is in the twilight of his career.
A string of injury problems has limited his impact this season. He has only featured in five league matches so far. Due to concerns about his fitness levels and age, City have reportedly asked the player to take a wage cut of 50% to stay at the club. This could lead to Aguero pondering over staying at the Etihad Stadium or seeking a new challenge. The move from City is no surprise given that the club had a similar approach with former stars like Yaya Toure.
City are aware that a number of European clubs have been alerted about Aguero’s availability. The Argentine superstar is free to agree terms with an international club and he has been subject to transfer interest from PSG, who recently appointed Argentine Mauricio Pochettino as their boss.
Since his move to City in 2011, Aguero has scored more than 250 goals to comfortably see him at the top of the City’s top goalscorer charts.
