David Alaba is on the verge of ending his long spell with Bayern Munich, as he prepares to run down the last six months of his contract with the German outfit. As one of the top left-backs who is still in the prime, Alaba is attracting a lot of interest from top clubs across Europe. Liverpool are understood to be one of the teams who are in for his signature. The Reds are badly in need of defensive reinforcements this season, but a signing like Alaba will be for the long-term. However, Liverpool are facing strong competition from Real Madrid.
After a lot of reports that Real Madrid were able to come to a pre-contract agreement with Alaba, the Bild has reported that no such deal is in place. It is not often that a top player like Alaba comes on the free transfer market even when they are in the prime of their careers.
It is highly unlikely that Bayern Munich will be ready to let Alaba leave in this January transfer window for a small transfer fee. A signing like Alaba could be useful for Liverpool in this current scenario, as manager Jurgen Klopp has had to do without many of his first choice defenders for most of the season. The likes of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk have missed major chunks of the campaign due to injuries.
After making more than 400 appearances and winning multiple honours like the Champions League and Bundesliga titles, Alaba is understood to be taking his time over his next destination. Bayern have still not lost hope about retaining the player, but contract talks have completely stalled. As of now, Liverpool and Real Madrid are the two major clubs with a strong hope of signing the defender. However, Barcelona could also enter into the picture once the outcome of the presidential election is known.
