Mesut Ozil’s Arsenal career is close to an end as the German midfielder and Arsenal have decided to terminate the contract ahead of schedule, according to The Athletic. Ozil is one of the highest earning players in the Premier League as he picks up £350,000-per-week through the contract signed in 2018. The contract still has six months to run, but the two parties have decided to come to a mutual agreement given that there was little progress in Ozil’s current plight.
The former World Cup winner would be able to pocket more than £ 7 million from now till the end of the season. However, this early termination will allow him an opportunity to play on a more regular basis. He has not been in the Arsenal squad since October. After being frozen out of the first team since March, it was looking very unlikely that Ozil would be able to force his way back into Arteta’s plans given that the team has been doing well of late.
Ozil’s last appearance for Arsenal was in a 1-0 win over West Ham in March. Fenerbahce appears to have secured a major signing, as Ozil’s next move will be to Turkish football. Even though the German international had been linked with numerous clubs like MLS outfit DC United, a move to Fenerbahce keeps him in the big leagues for the time being.
The midfielder was one of the expensive acquisitions by Arsenal after coming from Real Madrid for around £42 million in 2013. Since then, he has featured in more than 250 matches, which have yielded 44 goals and 77 assists. Ozil was also instrumental in helping Arsenal end several years of trophy drought and he leaves the Gunners after having picked up three FA Cup medals. The transfer to Fenerbahce is expected to take place in the next few days.
