Reading to lose again

To categorise the recent form of either side as anything other than rubbish would be over egging things. Reading have lost three on the spin and have just one win from their last 10 matches. Preston's season got off to a woeful start last weekend too as they lost 4-1 to a newly promoted side on their own patch. It was their fourth defeat in five with the other match being a draw. The reason we give Preston the edge is that their longer term form is better with four wins in 10 and they're fresh off the back of a convincing cup win; that will do confidence the world of good even if it was against Mansfield.

There will be plenty of goals

Results might have been lacking for both Reading and Preston but goals have still been flying in thick and fast; we expect that will continue. Four of Reading's last five matches have gone over the 2.5 mark with their game average sitting at 3.4 goals. Preston's last five have seen three matches exceed the 2.5 threshold; they happen to be the most recent trio of games too. In terms of goals per game, their average is exactly the same as Reading – 3.4 per match.

Scott Sinclair to score

Our final prediction is for Scott Sinclair to bag a goal at some point during the match. Sinclair netted nine goals in the league last season but missed last weeks opener. He started against Mansfield in the League Cup and scored a brace. It will likely see him come into the reckoning for a starting spot against Reading and, if chances fall his way, he'll be confident of sticking one away.

Preston to extend Reading's poor run

Reading ended last season in poor shape and it meant they missed out on a top six spot. Unfortunately, their pre-season results and opening week of this campaign suggest there could well be some lasting pain from that disappointment too. They're conceding too many goals and not scoring enough; it's a bad combination. If that's to change against Preston they need a big performance from the likes of Liam Moore and Michael Morrison. As for Preston, they ended last season well but had a shocker in their opener last week. Declan Rudd came off injured after 12 minutes in that game and will miss out again here. If the Preston defence can't protect him then goals will be needed. Will our scorer tip Scott Sinclair deliver?
