Taking a penalty isn’t as easy as it looks, especially at the highest level. In the Premier League, goalkeepers are big, commanding and confident. They also come prepared, armed as they are with dossiers of analysis on opposition strikers.
Many players have tried and failed from the spot. Some have done so on a frequent basis. However, there are a select few who, over time, make scoring penalties appear almost routine.
Some of these individuals, such as Jermain Defoe and Harry Kane, are clinical finishers who see spot-kicks as a chance to add to their already sizeable ‘goals scored’ tallies.
Others, such as Charlie Adam and Yaya Touré, are playmakers with deft touches capable of deceiving the most composed of shot-stoppers, or reliable types such as James Milner who do not fear the responsibility that comes with taking a penalty.
However, none of the aforementioned five appear in the top 20 when it comes to the all-time top-scoring penalty takers in Premier League history.
