Widely regarded as the best competition outside of the traditional top five European leagues by many football fans, the Primeira Liga is again bringing the drama this season as Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Porto do battle for the crown.
After 17 matches, it's Sporting who currently lead the way at the top of the standings, as they sit just one point above fierce cross-city rivals Benfica thanks to their return of 14 league victories – the most of any side. The pair have also both won their last four league outings in succession as they begin to leave Porto in the dust to an extent.
Having scored just 25 goals to this point, which is just the eighth most in the division, the Dragons sit a further four points back from Benfica in third spot, and will need to turn around their inconsistent form quickly if they're to maintain a title push over the second half of the season.
Primeira Liga big 3 betting odds – latest news
As mentioned before, it's Sporting who currently sit on top of the pile in Portugal thanks to their impressive form of late. That's because the Lions find themselves in stunning form of late, winning all of their last seven outings across all competitions. That streak has subsequently seen them also progress in the UEFA Europa League, Taça de Liga and Taça de Portugal in the process.
However, a few first-team stars have departed for AFCON and the Asian Cup, including 20-year-old defender Ousmane Diomande, who is heavily linked with a big money move away. But even with that disadvantage, Sporting should grab another win this weekend.
As for Benfica and Porto who continue to chase them, both sides will also fancy their chances of maintaining the pressure this matchday with victories. Benfica have been the pick of the pair so far this campaign domestically as they enter this round, after winning all four of their prior league outings.
That has put Benfica in with a chance of leapfrogging Sporting. However, It's been less than ideal for Porto of late, as Sérgio Conceição's side have won just two of their last four league outings, which included a 2-0 loss to Sporting back in mid-December.
Primeira Liga big 3 – our picks for the next round
Sporting Lisbon to win 3-0 vs Vizela (7/1)
Despite an AFCON-hit Sporting having to travel to face Vizela away from home on Thursday evening, they should prove too strong for their opposition here. To this point, the capital club have won all seven of their head-to-head meetings with their opponents throughout the current century, with all seven also seeing the visitors score more than once in the process.
As such, backing a routine 3-0 victory for Sporting could be the play here, with some great value to be had at 7/1, especially as they've kept four clean sheets across their past seven competitive fixtures including in each of their last two outings.
Benfica to win 2-0 vs Boavista (11/2)
On Friday night in Portugal's top-flight, Boavista should give Benfica a good game but on home soil. But it's difficult to see past the Eagles grabbing another three points here in their pursuit of Sporting. As mentioned before, the hosts find themselves in superb form of late, having won each of their last four league outings.
Overall, it's seven wins in succession for Benfica, whilst they remain unbeaten across their last 12 fixtures, despite facing difficult opposition in teams like Inter Milan, RB Salzburg and Braga during that time.
The home side also haven't lost at Estadio Da Luz since all the way back in early April in the league, which leaves them primed for more success in this one. And they'll be absolutely desperate to get their revenge on Boavista here, after they lost 3-2 in the reverse fixture on the opening matchday of the season in the 103rd minute!
Porto to win 2-1 vs Moreirense (15/2)
Without a doubt, Porto have the hardest fixture out of the three this weekend, as they take on Moreirense on Saturday evening. That's mainly due to their opposition sitting in 6th spot ahead of this weekend's action and with one eye on European qualification, but even with that, we still expect Porto to grab the win here.
In what's likely to be a close game, we're opting for a home 2-1 victory for the Dragons even despite their goalscoring woes in the league this campaign. That's mainly due to their solid record against Moreirense as Porto have lost just two of the prior 29 competitive meetings, whilst on home soil, they've won all 13 of the past such fixtures by a combined aggregate score line of 38-7.
