Preston to edge it

We kick off our predictions by backing Preston to win albeit we think they'll have to work extremely hard for it against a Derby side that simply don't know when to throw in the towel. Derby have lost just one of their last five games taking points of plenty of the Championship's so called bigger hitters. Preston are no fools though; yes, they lost to QPR last time out but they'd not lost in nine games in all competitions prior to that. There were plenty of draws in that run mind. The reason we think they edge is because of the passing of Trevor Hemmings (the club's owner). It will bring a special feel to the air at Deepdale; it's just one of those things where you think Preston will find a way…somehow.

Goals won't be in large supply

Regardless of whether or not our first tip comes in there is one thing you can almost hang your hat on; this game will not see a truck load of goals. Preston have seen three of their last five games fall under 2.5 with four of Derby's previous five coming up short. It's not just the last five though. Preston's season long average is 2.5, which is obviously on the cusp. Derby, however, have an average of 1.4; that's a league low with Barnsley the next lowest at 1.9. Three of the last five head to heads have been short of 2.5 too!

Emil Riis to score

A game of few goals doesn't mean a game of no goals. We think Preston striker Emil Riis will find himself on the scoresheet at some point in the 90 minutes. He's scored six goals in all competitions so far this season and bagged last time out against QPR. His confidence will be high after that and, having had a week off, he'll be chomping at the bit to get out there and terrorise the Derby backline.

Preston vs Derby: An emotional day but lots at stake

Derby's financial ruin is big news but every now and then you'll get a wake up call that tells you football isn't everything. Preston have had that this week with their owner, Trevor Hemmings, sadly passing away. It means this game becomes about more than just the points at stake with a performance needed to honour a man who has done so much for the club. As for Derby, as harsh as it sounds, Wayne Rooney needs his players to park the atmosphere and occasion. The Rams need points; they simply have to play the game. As usual, Rooney will look to his experienced pros to help the team through. Unfortunately for him, Phil Jagielka and Sam Baldock, who are two of those players are doubts at the moment.
