Mark Hughes lived to fight another day after a board meeting with the Stoke City hierarchy this week but lose to Coventry City in the FA Cup third round the the axe above his head may come down.

The Potters have been dreadful in the Premier League this season and a loss to Newcastle United on New Year's Day left the club 16th in the table and outside of the relegation zone by two points despite having played more games than the sides around them.

It means this weekend's FA Cup trip to Coventry takes on further importance for the Stoke boss. Lose and even Stoke's patient board are likely to run out of patience.

Given a win is required, Hughes is likely to name a relatively strong side to face the League Two club.

Erik Pieters is set to miss the game with a tight hamstring while Bruno Martins Indi (groin), Ryan Shawcross (groin) and Glen Johnson (knee) are all set to miss the game.
