Virgil van Dijk is unlikely to make a first senior start in eight months against Stoke City.

The Southampton captain was a Liverpool transfer target this summer but failed to push through a move to Anfield and is being integrated back into the first team.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has spoken about whether he deserves to captain Southampton again.

“I will think about it,” he said.

“Little by little he’s getting better. It’s difficult to see the best version of Virgil in his first or second game back, but we have to be patient.

“We’ve got another two weeks after this game due to the international break, and we’ll play a friendly game in the middle.”

He’s been restored to the bench in recent weeks, but is unlikely to start against Stoke.

There are no injury concerns for Pellegrino, but Matt Targett is unlikely to be risked after returning to training following an ankle injury.

Kick-off at the bet365 Stadium is at 3pm, and the game isn’t being shown on TV.
