Newcastle United will be hoping to maintain their impressive start to Premier League life under Rafa Benitez when they make the long journey to Southampton this weekend.

The Magpies sit in a comfortable ninth place after picking up ten points from their opening seven games. Southampton, meanwhile, are two points back in 12th after a steady, if unremarkable, beginning to their 2017/18 season.

Newcastle and Benitez will have been boosted by the news that captain Jamaal Lascelles signed a contract extension this week after the 23-year-old's fine performances of late.

But the Magpies boss will be hoping Matt Ritchie, Christian Atsu and Jonjo Shelvey shake off slight knocks to be fit for the clash. Massadio Haïdara (knee) and Paul Dummett (hamstring) are ruled out.

The last time these two sides met, it was the Saints who came away with a 3-1 win as Newcastle limped towards relegation in 2016.
