Liverpool travel to Maribor tonight in what could prove to be a crucial Champions League fixture. The Premier League side drew both of their opening two games in the competition and need a win to kick-start their campaign.
Despite this, Jürgen Klopp is likely to rotate his goalkeeper, bringing Loris Karius in for Simon Mignolet, as he did for his team’s opening group stage matches against Sevilla and Spartak Moscow.
However, the German boss denied the possibility of further rotation.
“No chance. This is the last place to do those things. This is a decisive moment in the group – we need to be confident and brave we don't need to think about the last game. We play Maribor twice now. We've already wasted points so we have to be very good again, it's an important moment.”
Liverpool will continue to be without several key first team players in the form of Sadio Mané, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne.
The absence of the latter will not be such an issue with Joe Gomez returning from suspension following his red card against Sevilla. However, Klopp may instead opt to bring in Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.
The injuries to Lallana and Mané are of far greater significance, though, and Liverpool may simply decide to keep faith in the attacking setup they utilised in the 0-0 draw with Manchester United last weekend.
This would entail Philippe Coutinho taking up a nominal left wing role that allows him positional fluidity with the freedom to come inside, while Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can would play either side of Jordan Henderson in the central midfield three, making driving runs forward in the channels.
Up front, Klopp may be wise to rotate Roberto Firmino out of the side for Daniel Sturridge. The Brazilian is out of form having not scored in five games, while the Englishman will be hungry to prove himself.
Kick off for Liverpool’s clash with Maribor at Stadion Ljudski vrt is 7:45 pm, and the match will be shown live on BT Sport ESPN.
