The Championship Team of the Season for the 2020/21 campaign has been announced by the guys at whoscored.com, using pure stats to work out the best starting eleven of the campaign. The team itself consists only of the starting eleven and all of the stats have been compiled before the play-offs have begun so only include the opening 46 league games. We're going to take a look at how the stats match up to each teams performances and see if there are any surprise inclusions or exclusions from the Championship Team of the Season 2020/21
2020/21 Championship Team of the Season
The champions Norwich have three players in the team of the season, which isn't a surprise given their overall performance, but amazingly second-placed Watford don't have a single representation in the best eleven players of the campaign. Brentford, Barnsley, Stoke, Reading, Blackburn, Cardiff and Bournemouth all have at least one player in the team of the season, with Barnsley being the only team other than Norwich to have multiple players in the 11-man squad. While the stats don't lie, there are bound to be a few fans of Championship teams that will be left scratching their heads at how none of their players made the list, especially the Watford faithful.
Perhaps in order to get the most midfielders and attackers into the Team of the Season, whoscored.com have lined their players up in a 3-4-3 formation, which certainly wasn't the most used tactic in the Championship this season, and the team is therefore made up of one goalkeeper, three defenders, four midfielders and three attackers.
Norwich City's Tim Krul with a rating of 6.87 is statistically the best goalkeeper in the Championship this season, which won't come as too much of a surprise considering that the Canaries claimed the Championship title. The former Dutch international claimed the second-highest number of clean sheets this season (17), only being better by Freddie Woodman of Swansea City (20).
Michal Helik of Barnsley made it into the Team of the Season back three with a rating of 7.25 and enjoyed a very impressive debut season in English football. The 25-year-old Polish centre-back swapped Cracovia for Barnsley last year and made 43 appearances in the Championship, scoring 5-goals.
The next best defender, according to the stats, was Norwich's Grant Hanley who earned a rating of 7.19. The Scottish international defender formally of Balckburn and Newcastle played 42 times this season and scored 1-goal. Norwich play out from defence and Hanley proved excellent on the ball, making the most accurate passes in the Championship this season (2570).
Another Barnsley boy made it into the defence for the Championship Team of the Season, with Mads Andersen finishing the campaign with a rating of 7.19. At 23, Mads Andersen is the youngest of this back three and made his mark in the air, winning 308 aerial duels, the most of any defender in the second tier this season.
Emiliano Buendia made the right side of midfield his own this season, claiming a rating of 7.78 with whoscored.com. It's hardly surprising to see Buendia in the Team of the Season considering he was one of Norwich's best players in the Premier League during their relegation campaign. Buendia actually scored the highest rating on the whoscored.com chart this season thanks largely to his 15 league goals and 16 assists.
The first of the central midfield spots goes to Stoke City's Nick Powell who scored 12 times and provided 5 assists for his team in 2020/21. Powell, 27, was also one of the most fouled players in the Championship (114) and it is from many of those free-kicks that Stoke did damage to their opponents. The English midfielder claimed a rating of 7.10.
Michael Olise of Reading claimed the other spot in the centre of midfield with a rating of 7.06. What an impressive campaign this teenager enjoyed, which included 12 assists, the second-highest amount by any single player in the Championship this season.
Bournemouth's only player to make it into the Team of the Season was the Dutch winger Arnaut Danjuma who had a rating of 7.21. The 24-year-old claimed 15 goals and 7 assists for the Cherries with the majority of those arriving in what was an excellent final third of the season for the former Club Brugge man.
Up-front there would have been a number of players to choose from but only three could make it into the Team of the Season and the stats decided who that should be.
Former Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong was continuously linked with a move back to the Premier League this season, following his excellent displays for Blackburn Rovers. Armstrong netted a fantastic 28 league goals for Rovers and earned a rating of 7.15 but even with a striker in top form, Blackburn missed out on a top-six finish.
The best rating of any striker this season went to Cardiff City's Kieffer Moore who finished the campaign on 7.56 according to whoscored.com. The Welsh international scored 20-goals this season and for a 6'5″ player in these times of less-direct football, that is quite an achievement. The 28-year-old really made his name at Barnsley but this season he has reached new levels and will surely be sought after in the summer.
The third and final striker to make the list took the Championship by storm in his first season in the red and white of Brentford. Ivan Toney claimed a rating of 7.41 for his 31-goal haul in the 2020/21 campaign, leading Premier League clubs to seriously consider signing the former Newcastle striker this summer. Since leaving the Magpies, Toney has made his way back up through the leagues and could still guide Brentford to the Premier League via the playoffs but no matter what happens this season, his future surely lies in the top-flight of English football.
