Netherlands vs Qatar – Top Two Tips

One, or possibly both, of these nations could have their place in the knockout stage confirmed before they even kick a ball on Tuesday. The Netherlands are the big favourites to win Group A but Qatar will be hoping that the home advantage helps them secure a place in the next round.

Netherlands to Win-to-Nil

We're backing the Netherlands to be at their very best against the home nation and have backed van Gaal's men to claim all 3pts and a clean sheet. While the Dutch haven't been best-known for their defending of late, having the likes of van Dijk, de Ligt and de Vrij at the back will always give the Netherlands a platform to build upon and we believe they will keep the Qatar forwads at bay in the final round of group games.

Memphis Depay to Score

Memphis Depay heads into this World Cup as the Netherlands top striker and most likely goalscorer. Despite coming close to leaving cash-strapped Barcelona in the summer, Depay remains a top forward and someone who regularly scores for his country in big games like this as well as friendlies. Depay is closing in on van Persie's goalscoring record for the Netherlands and we believe he will score at least one goal against Qatar on Tuesday.

How will Qatar fair against their toughest test yet?

Netherlands

The Netherlands are one of the outside picks to win the World Cup this year but can they finally break the habit of a lifetime and go all the way? Depending on how well tested they are during the group stage, the Netherlands certainly have quality in all areas of the pitch but we're not convinced they have the strength in depth to win the World Cup this year if they get injuries to any of their key players, particularly Depay. Frenkie de Jong will be looking to impress in Qatar as he hopes to get a deal sorted with Man Utd ahead of the January transfer window.

Qatar

The Qatar quad has a good mix of youth and experience within it, even some of their younger players such as Salman and Al-Rawi have over 50-caps to their names at the age of just 24. Up-front, Almoez Ali is the player to watch out for as the 26-year-old has 39 goals in 75 games for his country (as of 26/09/2022), while captain Hassan Al-Haydos is 31 and has played 164 times for Qatar and has netted 33-goals but is also a playmaker as well as a goalscorer. Karim Boudiaf is the most experienced midfielder in the squad with over 100 appearances for Qatar, and the same can be said for defender Abdelkarim Hassan. Goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb, 32, will be both looking forward and nervous about going up against one of the best footballing nations the world has ever produced.
