The quarter finals of the World Cup in Qatar re here and we have some spectacular matchups. One of them is the Netherlands vs Argentina duel, scheduled for December 9th. Here is our detailed preview of this game, along with some free betting tips.
Netherlands vs Argentina World Cup 2022 Prediction
The Netherlands and Argentina meet at the World Cup for the sixth time in their history when the pair lock horns in the Quarter-Finals of Qatar 2022 today. We're expecting an entertaining 90-minutes between a Dutch side that likes to play on the front foot and an Argentina side that has been relying on the magic of 35-year-old Lionel Messi.
Both Teams to Score
We are expecting goals in this game at both ends of the pitch. Both teams have scored in two of the Netherlands' four World Cup games so far in Qatar and the same can be said for Argentina. Both Netherlands and Argentina scored at least two goals in their last 16 matches but also conceded a goal each to lesser opposition, so you can see why we're not backing either side to keep a clean sheet in their Quarter-Final clash.
Over 2.5 Goals
At least three goals have been scored in five of Argentina's last seven international matches in all competitions and over 2.5 goals were produced as the Netherlands defeated USA 3-1 in the last round of the World Cup. We're fully expecting at least three goals to be scored in this Quater-Final tie between two teams that are at their best when playing attacking football. Neither defence fills us with complete confidence and we can see this game being decided by the forwards.

It's time to take a closer look at the latest markets and odds for Netherlands vs Argentina,
Netherlands odds: 41/14 (3.93)
Draw odds: 29/13 (3.23)
Argentina odds: 11/9 (2.22)
As you can see, the odds are stacked in favour of Argentina as things stand but we are expecting a really close game between these two great footballing nations. Still, Argentina is the favourite and they have a win probability of 45%, while the Netherlands has a 25.5% win probability. The probability of the game ending in a draw is 31%.
If you want to back a First Goalscorer in this game then the bookmakers recommend Lionel Messi whose odds are currently priced at around 9/2 (5.5) to score first, which amounts to a 18.2% probability. However, of you wanted to back a 35-year-old Lionel Messi to score a hat trick in this game then you can get some really good odds of 66/1 (67.00), although the probability of this happening is really low, just 1.5%.
The bookies also seem to think that this game won't have that many goals since the average odds on under 2.5 total goals are 7/11 (1.64), which is the same as a 61.1% probability. On the other hand, over 2.5 total goals comes with a 40.4% probability and odds of 31/21 (2.48).
Previous Meetings
The Netherlands and Argentina have met quite a few times in World Cup history – this will be their sixth meeting at the biggest stage. Their last duel was in the semi finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which was a tight match that was decided after penalties that sent Argentina to the final, where they lost to Germany.
Another memorable duel between these teams was back in 1998, in France, when they met in the quarter finals, in a game that was decided in the last minutes by a spectacular goal by Dennis Bergkamp.
Two old enemies prepare for battle once again at the World Cup
Netherlands
The Netherlands never looked like losing their last 16 match against the USA, taking the lead after 10-mintues through Depay. Blind scored a rare goal in first-half stoppage-time to make van Gaal's half-time team talk that much easier and although the UA pulled a goal back through Wright, the Netherlands responded really well and sealed their passage into the Quarter-Finals with an 81st-minute goal from Dumfries that made the final scoreline 3-1.
Predicted Lineup: Noppert (GK), Blind, Aké, van Dijk, Dumfries, Timber, de Roon, Klaassen, de Jong, Depay & Gakpo
Argentina
Argentina dominated the first half against Australia but did find it hard to break the underdogs down until the 35th-minute when who else but Lionel Messi fired the South Americans in front. Alvarez added a second goal in the 57th-minute and Argentina looked like they were going to cruise to victory. However, an own goal from Fernandez in the 77th-minute gave Australia hope and with virtually the last kick of the game, Australia almost equalised and had goalkeeper Martinez to thank for keeping the scoreline at 2-1.
Predicted Lineup: Martínez(GK), Otamendi, Acuña, Molina, Romero, Gómez, De Paul, Mac Allister, Fernández, Messi & Álvarez

Player to Watch: Cody Gakpo
Netherlands vs Argentina is a huge game in the World Cup and has a lot of history attached to it, mostly disappointing for the Dutch. However, while all the focus is going to be on Lionel Messi and whether he can guide his Argentina side through to the Semi-Finals, we believe that it is a young forward that could make the difference in this clash of the titans.
Cody Gakpo really impressed during the group stage, filling in for the injured Memphis Depay and scoring a goal in each of the games against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar. Gakpo has really stepped up the mark in front of a global audience and will surely earn a move to one of Europe's elite clubs in the next transfer window or perhaps the summer.
Will Gakpo keep his good form in Qatar going against Argentina?
Able to play across the front three, Gakpo is tall and fast much like Erling Haaland and he added goals to his game last season for PSV, scoring 12 times in 22 starts in the Eredivisie and has netted 9 times in 14 starts this season.
Gakpo came close to signing for Man Utd in the summer but the Red Devils went with Antony instead but now it looks like the Premier League giants will make another move for the Dutch international in January. However, Gakpo's World Cup performances have led PSV to up the asking price for the talented 23-year-old as reported in the Express. In August, PSV had stated that they wanted £39m for Gakpo with Everton, Leeds, Man Utd and Arsenal all said to be interested in his services. Now, the Dutch club have upped the asking price to £52m purely based on his performances for the Netherlands, so it will be interesting to see if Man Utd follows up their interest or wait for the hype to down and make their move next summer.
