Marseille

Marseille’s first official match this season was on Wednesday. They lost 0-1 away vs Panathinaikos in the first leg of the Champions League playoffs.

This was 3rd defeat in just the last 4 games, with Marseille also changing managers this offseason. The team’s top goalscorer from the previous campaign Alexis Sanchez is no longer in the squad either. Signed Aubameyang as his replacement and the new leader of the attack.

The main absentee for this round 1 clash is the suspended centre-back Balerdi. Mbemba is likely to take his place from the off. The other player that will miss the game is midfielder Gueye. He’s still ineligible.

Predicted Lineup:

Lopez (GK), Clauss, Gigot, Mbemba, Lodi, Kondogbia, Veretout, Ndiaye, Onuahi, Sarr & Aubameyang

Reims

After a solid last season and easily secured mid-table finish Reims aim even higher this campaign. They certainly look to have prepared well with 5 wins in 5 friendlies over the summer months. Flips was the most impressive player in the summer with 2 goals and 4 assists in those 5 matches.

Still active on the transfer market. Cajuste is not expected to play as he’s about to move to Napoli. At the same time, playmaker Nakamura could join before the weekend.

The new signing Okumu seems set to start in defence as the regular Agbadou misses the game suspended. De Smet, Teuma and Ito nurse injuries and they are all considered doubtful.

Predicted Lineup:

Diouf GK), Foket, Okumu, Abdelhamid, Wilson-Asbrand, Richardson, Munetsi, Matusiwa, Flips, Khadra & Diakite

Player to Watch: Yehvann Diouf

Reims rely heavily on their star goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf and for them to earn any points from game 1 he will have to be at his best again. Diouf started 31 of the 38 league games last season and he achieved 14 shutdowns in those 31 appearances. This was the second-most clean sheets in the entire Ligue 1 last term.
