Manchester United vs Galatasaray last five H2Hs: Do or die for dreary Devils

Manchester United are taking on Galatasaray on Wednesday evening in the Champions League as the Red Devils look to move off the foot of Group A, but playing away in Turkey is never going to be an easy task.

The two sides have not come across each other much in European competitions, just seven in total and they have all come in the group stages of the Champions League with there being nothing to separate them on most occasions.

Manchester United vs Galatasaray H2H record

  • Man United wins: 2
  • Draws: 3
  • Galatasaray wins: 2

The first fixture between Man United and Galatasaray was back in 1993 which was a thrilling 3-3 draw, before then having nothing to separate them in the reverse Champions League fixture a few weeks later with the scores 0-0.

Someone who will be eager to make his mark on this fixture once again is Wilfried Zaha, the ex-Man United star who scored on his Old Trafford return last time out.

Galatasaray 0-0 Man United – September 28, 1994

This was just the second time that Man United had travelled to Turkey to play Galatasaray in their hostile home environment and they were indeed finding it a tough nut to crack. The Red Devils battled hard for a 0-0, the second time they had recorded this scoreline away from home against Galatasaray and with players such as Paul Ince and Ryan Giggs on the pitch they couldn't break the deadlock.

Man United 4-0 Galatasaray – December 7, 1994

Man United made sure they put things right in the reverse fixture just a few weeks later at Old Trafford with Sir Alex Ferguson's men running out comfortable 4-0 winners to help them on their way out of the group stages.

Goals from Roy Keane, Simon Davies, David Beckham and a Bulent Korkmaz own goal were more than enough to see off a sorry Galatasaray team who were struggling away from home against Europe's elite.

Man United 1-0 Galatasaray – September 19, 2012

A far less impressive display and result from Man United almost 20 years on from the last fixture but three points were all that mattered and they came via Michael Carrick early into the first half.

However, it wasn't as straightforward as that with Galatasaray hitting the bar and post in either half before Jonny Evans almost clumsily gave away a penalty in second-half added time, but the referee on the day was unmoved.

Galatasaray 1-0 Man United – November 20, 2012

Yet another tough night in Turkey for Man United saw them slip up and allow Galatasaray to consolidate second spot in the group thanks to a slender 1-0 win. The Turkish giants had Burak Yilmaz to thank once again in Europe – he'd scored all five of their goals in the competition at this point – with his second-half strike enough for all three points.

While both teams advanced through to the knockout stages, it was yet another trip to Turkey without a win for Man United, something they are still yet to do when playing Galatasaray.

Man United 2-3 Galatasaray – October 3, 2023

This was perhaps the most damning of all results against Galatasaray for Man United as they squandered the lead twice in this game having gone 1-0 and 2-1 up respectively during the game. Former man United ace Zaha scored against his former club before teammates Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu and Mauro Icardi added late goals to seal a surprising three points.

Galatasaray even missed a penalty through Icardi in the second half, but Man United did not heed that warning and allowed the Turkish side back in the game once again as they left Old Trafford with all three points.

If Man United lose to Galatasaray this time around they will be eliminated from the Champions League, so it will be a very ample time to get their first away victory against Galatasaray.

Man United vs Galatasaray H2H: Potential MVP

If the reverse fixture was anything to go off, then the attacking players will be the most important players on the pitch and the man for Man United in the Champions League this season has been Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker is yet to score for Man United in any competition other than the Champions League.

Hojlund has five goals in four Champions League appearances this season, including two against Galatasaray when they lost at Old Trafford so he will be itching to go one further with a hat-trick and put things right after that damning defeat.

Man United vs Galatasaray – Key trend

Both teams scoring in this fixture has been very rare happening just twice in the seven meetings one of them came back in 1993 and the other was obviously just a few weeks ago and with the three games in Galatasaray's stadium producing just one goal it looks to be a low key affair. Because of this, we are going for Galatasaray to win and under 2.5 goals.
