Manchester United are growing keen on Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcus Llorente. The midfielder is a key part of the squad which has remained top of La Liga this season. The 26-year-old has been able to come up with 10 goals and nine assists in his in his 36 appearances across the La Liga and Champions League games. Llorente is making around £90,000 per week on his contract with Atletico. According to the Daily Mail, United are ready to bump up the wages to almost £180,000. This would put him in line with many top midfielders in the Premier League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not completely utilised his squad with players like Donny van de Beek getting very little action. A few weeks ago, he suggested that United need to be careful with their transfer purchases after having ‘overspent’ on players in the last few years.
Yet, the Norwegian appears to have changed his stance after witnessing an impressive and consistent set of numbers from Llorente. United are reportedly ready to spend in excess of £65 million for the midfielder, who recently made his debut for Spain in November.
One of the major issues for the Red Devils in trying to complete the offer would be Llorente’s contract length. Atletico are in a strong position, as the player’s contract does not expire until the summer of 2024. A versatile player capable of contributing to the team from different positions, Llorente is a valuable asset in any team. However, Atletico are understood to be considering the possibility of selling a player like Llorente for a sizeable fee. Many La Liga clubs have been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic with the likes of Barcelona seeing their debt exceed a billion euros.
Llorente came to prominence when he scored two goals against Liverpool last season to knock the Reds out of the competition.
