Pep Guardiola is a perfectionist. His Manchester City side have comfortably romped home to the Premier League title. The Citizens have also clinched the Carabao Cup. All in all, it's been a good second season for the boss and his players.
However, he's already looking at ways to improve his current set of players. With Fernandinho turning 33 in May and İlkay Gündoğan far from reliable due to injuries, a midfielder will be at the top of their summer wish list.
Reports recently have suggested the club's interest in Shakhtar Donetsk's Fred has waned but that Jorginho has emerged as a possible target.
Joao Santos, Jorginho's agent, has claimed “only Premier League clubs” could afford the Napoli maestro if the Italian was placed on the transfer market.
“Future in England?” Santos said. “He has a certain value for Napoli, a certain figure that almost only Premier League clubs can afford.
“Moreover, he can't be sold to another club in Italy. He's being followed by big teams and that's normal because he plays at the highest levels for Napoli, plus we're talking about an international player now.
‘To date, no official offers have arrived. Jorginho's only thinking about Napoli and we must wait until the end of the season to make certain assessments.
“As for Napoli, we haven't received a contract offer from them yet. They want to set his release clause at €100million, while we want it at €20million. It’s best to just not put one in.”
If Napoli are true to their word and do demand close to £90million then his agent is right, it limits who is able to afford the midfielder. However, if Guardiola is keen then his employers will stick a hand in their bottomless pockets to make a deal happen.
