Liverpool Premier League history through the decades: Young stars budding in spring

In Liverpool Premier League history through the decades, March has proven to be a fruitful month of big results, goals and young players producing the goods.

Club legend Robbie Fowler will look back on the spring season with a fondness for a standout display in 1994, while Michael Owen emulated such heroics a decade later in 2004.

With the Reds ramping up their quest for a coveted quadruple in 2023/24, we delve into the history books to see how this March could unfold for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Liverpool Premier League history through the decades – Reds on the March

1994: Fowler wins the derby

An 18-year-old Robbie Fowler already cemented his place in Liverpool’s starting lineup by 1994. The Liverpool native burst into the Reds’ first team in 1993 and showcased his exceptional talent with nine goals from his first 17 Premier League games.

A young Fowler had already convinced the Anfield faithful of his elite ability, but he wrote his name into the Liverpool history books in March 1994 against Everton.

Despite growing up as an Everton fan, Fowler scored the winner against his boyhood club in the 150th Merseyside derby. Liverpool trailed their fierce rivals 1-0 before Ian Rush levelled. Fowler then produced one of his most memorable moments in a Liverpool shirt by striking on 44 minutes and leading Liverpool to a 2-1 win over the Toffees.

Fowler went on to score 183 career goals for the Reds and was bestowed with the nickname ‘God’ by the Reds of Merseyside.

Many young greats have followed in Fowler’s footsteps, with Michael Owen and Steve Gerrard also producing magic in front of the Kop. Liverpool also has a new crop of young stars coming through the ranks, and one player looking to emulate Fowler’s success is Jayden Danns.

The 18-year-old showcased his talent with a brace in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Southampton in February. More opportunities could be coming for the teenager in the upcoming match against Sparta Prague, and he is backed at 11/2 to strike in the Europa League.

2004: Owen puts Pompey to the sword

Owen was another prolific Liverpool forward of previous generations. Before departing for Real Madrid in 2004, the striker scored 158 goals in nearly 300 appearances for the Reds.

Two of Owen’s goals were crucial in Liverpool’s push for a top-four spot in the 2003/04 campaign away at Portsmouth. Gerard Houllier’s side dominated Pompey at Fratton Park, and Owen scored either side of the half time to add to Dietmar Hamann’s early volley.

Owen would score five more Premier League goals during that season to guide the Reds to fourth place – a parting gift before the former England international left for Madrid.

Liverpool have often had deadly frontmen, who have guided the club to success, and this generation’s attacking focal point is Mohamed Salah.

While Salah has been ruled out through injury lately, he is fit again and could start against Man City this weekend. Although, a more likely full-game return could come next week at Man United in the FA Cup.

Salah has a strong scoring record at Old Trafford. The Egyptian netted a brace in the Reds’ 3-2 FA Cup loss in Manchester during the 2020/21 season and struck a hat-trick when Liverpool thrashed United 5-0 in the 2021/22 campaign.

Salah has already scored four braces this season and he could add another at Old Trafford. The Reds’ talisman has 9/1 to score 2+ goals against United on March 17.

2014: Reds knock Cardiff for six

Liverpool were agonisingly close to winning the Premier League title in 2013/14, but eventually fell short to eventual winners Man City.

Throughout the season, Brendan Rodgers’ side produced several dominant displays and scored over 100 league goals. One of these one-sided victories came in March 2014, as the Reds thumped Cardiff 6-3. Luis Suarez led the charge with a hat-trick, defender Martin Skrtel netted twice, and Daniel Sturridge also got on the scoresheet.

Liverpool have enjoyed similar Premier League dominance this season. Klopp’s outfit has stunned many opponents, notably against Luton and Chelsea (4-1) and Newcastle (4-2) at Anfield.

As the Reds aim to hold the top spot this March, they could target another high-scoring win at the end of the month. Brighton heads to Anfield on March 31, and Liverpool will be confident of sealing a big win, and the Merseysiders have odds of 8/1 to produce over 5.5 goals against the Seagulls.
