Liverpool will be entering in the transfer market to tide over a defensive crisis, according to manager Jurgen Klopp. The centre-back crisis has rocked Liverpool so far this season, as many of the first-team defenders like Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip have spent a major chunk of the campaign on the sidelines. Now, Matip has picked up another serious injury which will rule him out of action for several weeks, according to Goal.com. The Cameroonian defender had to be taken off at half-time in the 3-1 win over Tottenham.

Even though the win over Spurs was the first victory in five matches for Liverpool, the club are in danger of falling further behind Manchester United and Manchester City in the title race. Liverpool are fourth in the standings after the latest set of results. The defending champions have picked up four points fewer than Manchester City, who sit at the top of the table. Any more points will be a calamity for Liverpool in terms of defending the league title won last season.

So far in this January transfer window, Klopp has been playing down the likelihood of seeing any transfer activity. This, however, has changed on its head following the latest injury, which has left Liverpool with three of the key central defenders treatment table. The injury situation at Liverpool is so bad that Klopp had to feel the midfielder Jordan Henderson as one of the centre backs in the win over Tottenham.

Fabinho has played as a central defender on a few occasions, but even the Brazilian is out with an injury of his own. For the time being, the victory over Spurs will be a major confidence boost for the Reds, who will have to deal with last 16 round of the Champions League matches in February apart from the league games.
