Goncalo Ramos transfer fee: Full details of the PSG deal

PSG are on the brink of sealing a deal for a new striker. Goncalo Ramos is in the French capital to complete his move and could make his debut very soon with PSG set to kick off their Ligue 1 campaign this weekend against Lorient. Here are the full details of the PSG deal including the Goncalo Ramos transfer fee.

This deal has moved relatively quickly after PSG’s initial offer with Benfica unable to hold onto the striker who scored 27 times in all competitions for the Portuguese club last season. PSG are keen to sign Ramos as they seek a reliable goal threat in the absence of Leo Messi this season and potentially Kylian Mbappe too with the star forward having been barred from training with the first team squad, as PSG aim to force through a transfer that would prevent them from losing the France international for nothing next summer.

The transfer of Goncalo Ramos from Benfica to PSG is complicated slightly by the French club’s Financial Fair Play obligations which would make it tough for them to sign the player on a permanent basis this summer. Therefore, this will reportedly only initially be a one year loan, however PSG would have an obligation to buy next summer.

That effectively makes this a permanent transfer in all but name and the full Goncalo Ramos transfer fee is believed to be €80m. That would consist of an initial €65m with add-ons of €15m. That kind of transfer fee suggests PSG and their recently appointed boss Luis Enrique see the 22 year old as somebody who can make an immediate impact.

Clearly they’ll also have one eye on the future in a summer that has seen the French champions sign some younger players with new boys Manuel Ugarte and Kang-in Lee also only 22 years old. However Ramos has shown in Benfica and Portugal colours over the past twelve months that he is ready to make an impact on the big stage and he could be thrown straight into the starting eleven when this deal gets completed.

Is Ramos worth €80m?

Twelve months ago, it would have been impossible to envisage a scenario where Goncalo Ramos would make an €80m transfer this summer. He wasn’t a guaranteed starter at Benfica at that time, netting just 7 goals during the 2021/22 Portuguese Primeira Liga season.

However as we often see with young players, something clicked and the striker made huge leaps forwards during the 2022/23 campaign. Given the current market climate, it’s not a huge surprise to see one of the richest European clubs come in and quickly snap Ramos up.

That’s particularly true given the relative lack of imposing strikers who are capable of both acting as a focal point of a team’s attack whilst offering a reliable goal threat. Evenso, €80m is perhaps slightly above the market rate for a player who has only really had one truly convincing season and Benfica will feel as though they’ve got a good deal again, having sold striker Darwin Nuñez for an almost identical fee last summer to Liverpool.

As a further point of reference, Rasmus Hojlund’s recent transfer to Manchester United was in the region of €85m. Hojlund is a couple of years younger than Ramos who was also a reported target for United earlier this summer and it’ll be interesting to see whether United or PSG end up with the better player as these two promising young strikers continue to develop.
