Flick to Chelsea: Pochettino may be sacked despite Spurs win

Hansi Flick to Chelsea is a real possibility in the summer should Mauricio Pochettino be given the sack, according to German football journalist and transfer expert Christian Falk.

Writing in his latest column for CaughtOffside, Falk claims that Flick is now a “strong candidate” for the managerial role at Stamford Bridge, and that he would love to manage in the Premier League, in particular for one of the ‘big six' clubs. He has already talked to Chelsea previously, as he had a telephone call with former director Marina Granovskaia after Frank Lampard was sacked.

Flick to Chelsea: Should the German replace Pochettino?

Pochettino could feel very aggrieved that there are reports of other managers being linked with his job, especially after he guided his team to a 2-0 win at home to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Thursday night, moving them up to eighth place in the table and within reach of the European places. He also helped Chelsea reach the Carabao Cup final, narrowly losing out 1-0 to Liverpool in extra time after his side spurned plenty of chances.

However, after years of success in winning Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles under different managers, some Chelsea fans naturally expect more from their team, and when things are not going well, the manager is usually the fall guy. Some questions will be asked over whether Pochettino is getting the most out of the players at his disposal, namely British-record signing Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, who both cost over £100m, among others.

There is no doubt that Flick has an excellent CV, despite his lack of Premier League experience. He was an assistant manager when Germany won the FIFA World Cup in 2014, and at club level, he won the coveted treble with Bayern Munich in the 2019/20 season, including the Champions League. Before Pochettino, Chelsea had a German manager in Thomas Tuchel, who also won the Champions League.

It would certainly be a bold move from Chelsea to replace Pochettino with Flick at the end of the season, but it is one that could come under fruition depending on how the former finishes the campaign with the Blues.
