The 2017/18 Premier League season was supposed to see Everton turn the ‘big six' into a magnificent seven.
Backed by Farhad Moshiri, the Toffees spent big in the summer. Gylfi Sigurðsson arrived for £45million, Michael Keane was signed for £30million and Davy Klaassen was secured from Ajax for £23.3million.
A bad start quickly became a crisis and Everton acted by ditching Ronald Koeman. Their search for a successor was a mess and the Toffees were nosediving towards the relegation zone.
So Everton turned to Sam Allardyce, who has done what Sam Allardyce does: steady the ship. The threat of falling into the drop zone has quickly eased and Everton can now look at the teams above them instead of below.
With more money to spend in January, it'll be intriguing to see who the Toffees target.
So in order to get a handle on what Toffees fans are thinking ahead of the transfer window opening on January 1, we canvassed the opinion of Mike from Everton FC – The People's Page.
Which areas do Everton need to strengthen in January and why?
We need a quick striker. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has done very well but he's only 20 and can't be expected to play every game. If he was to get a serious injury, we'd be in trouble as Oumar Nisasee can't carry us and Wayne Rooney has been better when playing deeper.
Defensively we've looked better since Big Sam arrived and the likes of Ashley Williams and Mason Holgate have done well. Michael Keane looked much better against Chelsea, too.
But we definitely need another left-back. Leighton Baines still has a lot to offer but isn't getting any younger, so we need to bring in some quality to support him.
Name three realistic transfer targets you would like Everton to sign in January and who should they replace in your starting XI?
I'd like us to go for Luke Shaw, either permanently or on loan. He could come in and challenge Baines, which isn't something we've needed for many years but is required now.
I'd like to see us go for Richarlison from Watford. He's shown the raw potential which suggests he will be a future star. It would be good to get him before he goes to a European giant, and it would be amusing to annoy Watford again.
And up front I think we should go for Christian Benteke. He's an achievable target for us and Big Sam knows him well. He would be an aerial threat and with Gylfi Sigurðsson putting crosses into the penalty area, would score a few goals.
What is your number one fear for the January window?
That we bring in more players and don't move any on. We've got a bloated squad as it is and players like Kevin Mirallas are just hanging around now.
If we are able to sign a striker then we should move Niasse on. There are a couple of others that should be sold, we need to trim the fat from our squad.
What would your dream January transfer window look like?
Signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang . . . that really is the dream! But it would be great to land a ‘Hollywood signing' who has Champions League quality and is willing to come to us.
