Eric Dier: Newcastle lead transfer race for Tottenham defender

Eric Dier is expected to end his time with Tottenham Hotspur before the transfer window slams shut next week.

Dier has spent nine seasons at Spurs, having joined the London club from Sporting CP in 2014.

He has been a reliable performer for most of his tenure at the club, making 361 appearances in all competitions for the Lilywhites.

His performances at club level saw him called up to the England national team in 2015, and to date, he has made 49 appearances for the Three Lions.

The 29-year-old still has 12 months left on his current deal at Spurs, and will have no shortage of suitors if he does leave Ange Postecoglou's side.

According to our exclusive information, Newcastle are leading the race for his signature and are ready to offer Spurs £8 million for his signature.

The Magpies are willing to offer Dier a two-year contract, possibly a further year if the club decides to exercise that option.

Eddie Howe's side are about to embark on their first Champions League campaign in 20 years, and someone with Eric Dier's experience and versatility could offer the Tyneside outfit strength in depth.

Newcastle aren't the only club in the Premier League after Dier's signature, however, with Fulham and Wolves also keen on the versatile defensive player's signature.

Arguably, Dier's best and favourite position is playing in central defence. He has, however, often been deployed at right-back or even in a defensive midfield position on occasion.

Eric Dier moved to Portugal with his family when he was seven and is a Sporting Academy graduate, having also spent a season at Everton on loan.

He played two seasons with the Sporting first team before joining the North London side for £4 million in August 2014.
