Just when you think Chelsea haven't signed enough players, another one is set to come through the door! This time that comes in the form of a new goalkeeper, Djordje Petrovic of Major League Soccer side New England Revolution. It is only a matter of time before this transfer is concluded, and he may be available for selection this weekend.
23-year-old Petrovic has really caught the eye during his time in the United States, and the Serbian has been the subject of plenty of transfer speculation in recent times. Chelsea however will be the lucky team to get the towering keeper on board, and he'll challenge for the number one spot in Mauricio Pochettino's side.
It will certainly be interesting to see if he has indeed been brought in as first-choice. The fact he hasn't played in any of the supposed ‘big leagues' perhaps suggests he will enter behind Robert Sanchez in that respective battle for now. However, Chelsea are paying a handsome fee for Petrovic, and he will sign a long-term contract. Therefore, he will have time to adapt and will get an opportunity eventually.
The fact Chelsea are signing a goalkeeper at the age of 23 would suggest they want him for the first-team and for immediate use. It would be different if he was an 18-year-old for example, but the player may be expected to come in and make an impression. He is a Serbian international after all, and MLS is a strong league in its own right.
As for specifics on the deal, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that this transfer shall be confirmed on Wednesday, with the Premier League side paying an initial fee of $17.5million. Furthermore, the American side would receive a further $2.2million in add-ons.
Continuing the theme surrounding most of Chelsea's transfers, Petrovic will also sign a multi-year contract at Stamford Bridge. He will pen a seven-year deal until 2030, with the option of extending a further year to 2031 included as part of the deal.
As mentioned, he will compete with Robert Sanchez for the goalkeeper jersey with The Blues, whilst there is also Marcus Bettinelli and Lucas Bergstrom amongst the options available to Pochettino in this area of the pitch. Petrovic last played for The Revs a few weeks ago in a 2-1 defeat to Mexican team Queretaro in the Leagues Cup.
It remains to be seen if he will be considered for selection when Chelsea are next in action. This comes on Friday evening when they entertain Luton Town.
