Willian’s time at Arsenal appears to be heading for a quick conclusion, as the Brazilian is currently in talks with Corinthians over a potential return back to Brazilian football, according to Daily Mail. Since signing for Arsenal on a free transfer from Chelsea, Willian has struggled to hit the heights that were expected from him. The 33-year-old has been a bit-part player at Arsenal in this early part of the campaign, as Mikel Arteta looks more towards the younger players in the squad.
Only last summer, it appeared that Arsenal had managed a transfer coup by signing the experienced Brazilian on a free transfer. Willian still had a couple of years left in him and his vast experience in the Premier League would give the Arsenal squad a significant lift.
Since his move to Chelsea in 2013, Willian has been one of the top wingers in the Premier League. He has lifted a whole host of almost including the Premier League, Europa League, and FA Cup medals. However, he was able to only get a single goal and just seven assists in 37 games across all competitions for Arsenal. These represent a remarkable drop for a player who managed more than 120 direct goal involvements in 339 appearances for Chelsea.
Willian also happens to be one of the highest earning players in the squad with the weekly salary of just under £200,000. After having splashed the cash and players like Martin Odegaard, Arsenal seem to be in a position to cut the losses while Willian is also keen on playing regularly.
It remains to be seen if the wage budget freed up by the departure of Willian would be reinvested back into the squad. So far, Arsenal’s transfer activity has come under a lot of criticism with many high-profile signings failing to hit the mark as expected.
