Chile Copa America squad review: Old guard well past their peak

Chile have appeared at all of the last 19 editions of Copa America, while enjoying significant recent success in the competition. Notably, they won it in back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016, and nobody dares underestimate them.

It’s also 20 years since they failed to progress from the group stage, but the Chile Copa America squad of 2024 will do well to extend that record, especially in a Group A that contains the outright favourites Argentina.

Chile – Key facts

Year founded: 1895

Nickname: La Roja

Current FIFA ranking: 42nd

Chile have made a slow start to 2026 World Cup qualifying, winning just one of their six matches so far. That solitary victory came via a 2-0 margin against rivals Peru last October, but they slumped to a desperate 3-0 defeat in Venezuela only four days later.

Highest FIFA ranking: 3rd

Largely thanks to their double Copa America success in the mid-2010s, Chile rose to a peak of third place in the FIFA world rankings in 2016, and spent three years in the top-10 between 2015 and 2018.

Year of Copa America debut: 1916

La Roja finished last of the four teams who took part in the inaugural South American Championship in 1916, losing heavily to Uruguay and Argentina but holding Brazil to a 1-1 draw.

Best Copa America performance: Winners (2015 & 2016)

Home advantage helped fire Chile to their maiden Copa America win in 2015, after a penalty shootout win over Argentina in the final. Copa America Centenario was staged the following summer in the US, and Chile repeated the trick.

The standout moment was a thumping 7-0 quarter-final win over Mexico, though penalties would again be needed against Argentina to clinch the trophy, after 120 goalless minutes in New Jersey.

Player to watch: Dario Osorio

While veterans Claudio Bravo, Alexis Sanchez, Mauricio Isla and Eduardo Vargas remain integral to an ageing team, Chilean fans finally have a young player to get excited about in the shape of 20-year-old Dario Osorio.

The lively winger has just helped Midtjylland to the Danish title, averaging a goal every 155 minutes in the Superliga, and has been even linked with a move to Liverpool!
