Turner’s Novices’ Chase
The first race of Cheltenham Day 3 is Turner’s Novices Chase, a Grade 1 race that spans for two miles and four furlongs. It’s always an interesting race, but this year it all depends on who shows up.
There are rumours that both Bob Olinger and Galopin Des Champs might run the race and they are the two ante-post favourites. After all, Bob Olinger has an unbeaten record that stretches back to 2020, while Galopin Des Champs is probably the most improved runners after taking to fences very well.
Our Tip: Bob Olinger
Reasoning: As we already mentioned, Bob Olinger has an impressive winning streak that goes back to 2020 and stretches across five races. So, if this horse shows up to the race, we can see him improving this winning streak even further.
Pertemps Network Final
This series-ending handicap hurdle is three-miles long and often very tricky to figure out since many horses have already have their marks protected as they sneak into this race through one of many qualifiers.
In any case, one of the main favourites is Dunboyne, trained by Gordon Elliot who already won this race with Sire Du Berlais, who is also qualified for the race and may try again unless it runs the Stayer’s Hurdle. Other favourites are Winter Frog, Sporting John, and Alaphilippe.
Our Tip: Winter Frog
Reasoning: This horse is relatively inexperienced, but it is also fresh and has amazing stamina, which we saw when he finished second in Leopardstown. Most importantly, he is trained by Emmet Mullins who has a reputation as a great operator in handicaps.
Ryanair Chase
A relatively new addition to the St. Patrick’s Day Cheltenham is Ryanair Chase since the race was introduced back in 2005, it quickly became very popular and now it is the second featured race of Cheltenham Day 3, along with Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle.
The absolute favourite here is Allaho, who won the race last year as well. However, if he doesn’t make it to Cheltenham for some reason, his trainer Willie Mullins has other options, namely Energumene, so Mullins has reasons to hope for another win here after he won four of the last six races. Other favourites are Shan Blue and A Game.
Our Tip: Allaho
Reasoning: Allaho won the race last year in such a dominating fashion that it would hardly be prudent to bet on anyone else in this race.

Stayers’ Hurdle Cheltenham
The more traditional feature race on Cheltenham Day 3 is the Stayers’ Hurdle Cheltenham. This race is three miles long and it uses smaller obstacles, which makes it one of the hardest races to predict in the entire Cheltenham Festival.
Flooring Porter will be looking to win the race once again as he won Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle from the front last year, but the competition is fierce with Thyme Hill, Klassical Dream, Champ, and a few others all being up to the challenge, as well as the crowd favourite Paisley Park.
Our Tip: Flooring Porter
Reasoning: Although Flooring Porter was beaten by Klassical Dream at Leopardstown, we would still go with the reigning champion at Stayers’ Hurdle in this race since he has more experience at this track and is, after all, a proven champion.
Paddy Power Plate Handicap Chase
One of the more interesting handicap races when it comes to Cheltenham day 3 is the Paddy Power Plate, as proven by last-year’s win by The Shunter as he became fifth novice in six years to win this particular race.
So, it seems that potential is often preferable to experience when it comes to this race, but The Shunter is once again one of the main favourites, along with Celebre Dallen, Imperial Alcazar, Grand Paradis, and a few others.
Our Tip: Imperial Alcazar
Reasoning: Imperial Alcazar proved his ability with a win at a handicap chase in January, over the same course and distance as Cheltenham. That was also his third start over the fences only and we feel that we have yet to see his best performance.
Mares’ Novices’ Hurdles
This Grade 2 race is a perfect opportunity for mares that are just below top class to showcase their potential and ability. Willie Mullins had the most success here in recent years, but his streak was ended by Henry De Bromhead last year.
Dino Blue is one of Mullins’ top runners for this race and the main favourite, but the race has other interesting choices like Brandy Love, Grangee, Princess Zoe, and others.
Our Tip: Dino Blue
Reasoning: Given the experience and winning record by Willie Mullins at this race, his top horse has to be our choice to win it. Dino Mare is still in very early stage of her career, but a win here would put her in a higher class.
Kim Muir Challenge Cup
This is the second race at Cheltenham for amateur riders and the only handicap race in which amateur riders can compete here. Due to the coronavirus pandemic last year, the race was open to professionals, but that is not the case as the race returns to its traditional roots.
Some of the favourites to take the trophy here are Frontal Assault, Floueur, Birchdale, Smoking Gun, and Aint That A Shame.
Our Tip: Frontal Assault
Reasoning: Gordon Elliot’s strong recent record could be improved thanks to this unexpected performer since Frontal Assault had only three starts over fences. However, the horse looked great in those starts, especially in the beginners’ chase at Fairyhouse.
