Chelsea have had an £85 million bid for Inter Milan forward Romelu Lukaku rejected by the Italian outfit, according to BBC. After several weeks of chasing Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland, the blues have shifted their focus towards Lukaku after failing to convince the German club even with a reported £150 million on the table.
Lukaku is a former Chelsea player who failed to establish himself in the first team amidst stiff competition. After being sold to Everton back in 2014 for around £28 million, Lukaku quickly established himself as one of the top forwards in the Premier League and this led to a £75 million move to Manchester United in 2017. After three years at Old Trafford, the Belgian forward made the €80 million switch to Inter Milan in August 2019.
At 28 years of age, Lukaku is at the peak of his powers and Inter Milan are not ready to sell him easily since his contract does not run out until 2024. Chelsea’s interest in Lukaku heightened after learning about Inter Milan’s financial difficulties. The blues tried to bring in defender Achraf Hakimi from the Italian outfit for around €65 million, but the Moroccan ended up signing for PSG.
Chelsea have so far been unable to make any major moves in the transfer market. This has the potential to worry Thomas Tuchel, who is aware about his team’s lack of a clinical forward. Lukaku is a player who is experienced in the Premier League and he has more than 200 appearances in the Premier League. Even though his age might suggest a move of the short-term nature, the Champions League winners are keen to avoid a repeat of last season.
Lukaku was influential in Inter’s title-winning campaign as he came up with 24 goals in 36 matches. Lukaku has scored 20+ goals in each of his two seasons with Inter.
