After splashing the cash on multiple signings from Germany in the summer, Chelsea are eyeing a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, according to the Daily Mail. Haaland has been on the radar of many top clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City. Still only 20 years old, Haaland has caught the attention of the top clubs after coming up with 19 goals in just 17 matches so far this season. Following the sensational scoring record, clubs have also been sitting up and taking notice due to the presence of a release clause in Haaland’s contract.
The Norwegian moved to Borussia Dortmund from RB Leipzig only in January for £18 million. A release clause was inserted in his contract at the time of this move, but this clause does not kick in until 2022. Once it does, clubs will be able to bypass any negotiations with Dortmund and sign him for £66 million.
Chelsea are reportedly ready to disregard the presence of this release clause and make an offer for the player in the summer. Apart from helping win the race against other top clubs, it would also put Chelsea in a commanding position with regards to the attack, which has devoid of ideas in recent weeks.
Yet, it is rather strange that Chelsea are being linked with a forward at a time when the club already has names like Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham. Both players are unlikely to be happy with a place on the bench for long. Even if Olivier Giroud, who is the third centre forward in the squad, leaves in the summer, it would still make the forward positions immensely competitive unless one of Werner and Abraham is utilized in a different position. For the majority of his Chelsea career so far, Werner has been utilised as a left winger with an attacking bias. Perhaps, Lampard sees Werner’s future in the wings rather than as a centre forward.
