Real Madrid are becoming increasingly confident that they will be able to sign Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer in the summer. The Chelsea defender is out of contract in just over six months and he will be able to discuss terms with a foreign club from January.
The 28-year-old has been involved in a contract stand-off with Chelsea, as he is reportedly not happy with £7 million per year deal on the table. Rudiger is also aware that other defenders at Chelsea make around £10 million per year annually. The German international was signed from Roma back in 2017 for around £30 million. He has been instrumental with his powerful runs from the back. He has flourished under the 3-4-3 system employed by Tuchel compared to his performances when he was playing as one of the two centre backs. Chelsea are put in a difficult situation due to Rudiger delaying his decision to sign a new contract, as a number of regular first-team defenders are also out of contract.
Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Andreas Christensen are the other names could leave Chelsea this season.
Manager Thomas Tuchel might not be excessively worried about the situations surrounding Azpilicueta and Silva, but Christensen is a player whom Chelsea would like to keep for the summer and beyond. According to the Sun, the Chelsea manager said: “I have no good news. It was my understanding weeks ago that Andreas wants the same as me. He is a big part of a big club. He is a perfect fit and not done yet here.”
Still only 25 years old, the Danish international has been making huge progress over the last few years. He was a regular under Tuchel in the last season when Chelsea won the Champions League. Even he is out of contract at the end of the season, but the former Brondby player has not signed a new deal yet. As a result, Tuchel has tried to freeze him out of the first team by utilising the emergence of Trevor Chalobah.
