Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Romelu Lukaku for a club record fee of £97.5 million. The striker returns to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan for a second spell after initially signing for the blues back in 2011 when he was just 17.

Lukaku has signed a five-year contract worth around £200,000 per week. His transfer fee eclipses the £74 million bid for Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. Lukaku’s initial spell with Chelsea did not go as well as planned, as first-team opportunities were occasional. Yet, the Belgian impressed on loan spells with West Brom and Everton. This led to a £28 million move to Everton in 2014. Since then, Manchester United and Inter Milan have spent a combined £165 million to acquire him.
Lukaku has become of the top strikers in world football and he was instrumental – with 24 league goals – in helping Inter Milan get their first league title in more than a decade last season.
The signing of the 28-year-old has been done to address one of the pressing issues in the Chelsea team – the lack of a top goalscorer. This has been a problematic area for Chelsea ever since Diego Costa left the club in 2017. Since then, the likes of Alvaro Morata have been unsuccessfully employed to find a regular goalscorer.
Chelsea’s first target was undoubtedly Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland. Once it became clear that the German outfit were not going to sell their prized asset, Chelsea swiftly moved on to Lukaku – a player who has Premier League pedigree with more than 200 appearances so far.
The arrival of Lukaku will speed up the departure process of Tammy Abraham, who could be joining Roma for £34 million in the next few days. Chelsea have also sold Giroud to AC Milan for £1 million.
