Brighton Transfer News: Who could replace Moises Caicedo after £115m Chelsea move?

Brighton have undoubtedly been one of the busiest clubs in the current summer transfer window, both in terms of incomings and outgoings.

The Seagulls have been one of the most exciting teams in English football in recent times, with manager Roberto De Zerbi operating a hugely successful season on the south coast.

Their wonderful attacking football helped secure European football last time out, with the club finishing sixth in the 2022/23 Premier League table.

And they have started the new campaign in superb fashion, with Solly March, Joao Pedro, Simon Adingra and Evan Ferguson all scoring in their opening day 4-1 win against newly-promoted Luton Town.

The fantastic start comes despite the Seagulls losing many of their stars from last season, with Robert Sanchez leaving for Chelsea and Alexis Mac Allister leaving for Liverpool, while defender Levi Colwill has returned to Stamford Bridge following his loan at the south coast outfit.

And Brighton have now lost another star man, with Moises Caicedo also joining Chelsea for a British record fee of £115million.

Brighton transfer strategy

The Seagulls have proven to be one of the best clubs in terms of transfer strategies, with the club constantly signing relatively unknown players for minimal fees before selling them on for mega deals.

Sanchez and Mac Allister are prime examples, as are the sales of the likes of Leandro Trossard, Marc Cucurella, Ben White and Yves Bissouma.

Not only do Brighton thrive in this department, but they are also fantastic in quickly finding replacements for their big-money exits. Kaoru Mitoma has done a phenomenal job in replacing Trossard, with Pervis Estupinian replacing Cucurella expertly.

More recently, Bart Verbruggen looks to be the ideal replacement for Sanchez, while Igor has perhaps come in to fill in the gap left by Colwill.

Who could replace Caicedo at Brighton?

Now it is time to replace Caicedo, although De Zerbi may have already done that with the free transfer of talented midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud.

There is, however, a strong chance that another player will be brought in by the club to help fill the void left by the Ecuadorian, and it looks likely that that player will be Lille youngster Carlos Baleba.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the Seagulls have opened talks with the French club over a deal for the 19-year-old midfielder.

It is expected to be a difficult deal, but Brighton could push hard for the youngster as they view him as a very important player for the future.

The teenager already boasts 22 appearances for Lille, operating in defensive, central and even attacking midfield throughout his brief career so far.

He will certainly have big boots to fill if he does arrive as a long-term replacement for the recently departed Caicedo. The Ecuadorian only joined Brighton in February 2021, arriving on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Independiente del Valle.

He made a handful of appearances for the club before being sent out on loan to Belgian side Beerschot, but it quickly became apparent that he was a Premier League star in the making.

The midfielder leaves the south coast having made 53 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals along the way.
