The future of Manchester City playmaker David Silva has been a subject which has been rumbling in the background for a little while. The Premier League club undoubtedly are aware of other clubs interested in signing the Portuguese international, but do they really want to lose him? You would think not, but what is the latest on Barcelona's interest?
Furthermore, Paris Saint-Germain are another team that Silva is wanted by. The 28-year-old has been playing his football in the North West of England since signing from Monaco in 2017. Since then, he has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the Citizens, winning five Premier League titles along the way. Will he be adding to this tally?
Well, one thing is for sure, Man City manager Pep Guardiola does not want to lose him. The fact that he is one of the first names on the team sheet is all you really need to know regards to how much he is rated. Last season, only Rodri, Ederson and Erling Haaland made more league appearances for the club than Silva.
A significant update has emerged on the future of Silva, who also counts Benfica amongst his former clubs. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Man City have told Barcelona and PSG that Silva is quite simply not for sale. They are not willing to negotiate in any way shape or form over a potential deal, meaning he remains at City.
The player has another two-years remaining on his existing contract, and the club are hoping to tie Silva down to a longer deal to avoid the possibility of seeing him depart for nothing in 2025. A new contract will soon be put on the table for Silva and his representatives, but how Silva will approach this is the really interesting part.
Could it be that the talented midfielder sees 2025 as the right time to finish the Manchester City chapter of his career? In football terms, he has been at the club longer than you would say is average in this day and age for a top flight footballer. A switch to Barcelona, for a Spaniard such as him, could be a very attractive proposition that he wishes to make a reality one day.
Although City say that they aren't willing to let him go, the reality is that the situation could change if the player himself makes it known he won't sign a new contract. This would then open the door for City to negotiate a deal for the near future, as surely they won't want him to exit for free at some stage. It remains a case of watching this space, but City will make an offer to retain Silva over many more years.
At the age of 28, it could be argued that we are entering the very prime of what Bernardo Silva will be as a football player. It is likely still too early in his career to maybe entertain a mega-money move to Saudi Arabia, but another top European club would happily take him on board, even if Man City as a club ideally don't want him gone.
For now, Silva is set to stay where he is, although if time passes and Silva does not pen an extension, once he receives City's offer, then the club may have to change their stance. Barcelona and PSG will certainly be monitoring the situation rather closely.
