Barcelona are showing interest in Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and are even ready to give Philippe Coutinho in exchange for the 32-year-old, according to Sky Sports. Aubameyang came close to leaving Arsenal last summer before going on to sign a new three-year contract that runs until 2024. However, he was unavailable for Arsenal in the opening day 1-0 loss against Brentford due to illness.
Arsenal broke their club record back then to sign Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund in 2018. The Gunners paid around £60 million for the forward when he has been one of the key goal scorers for the club over the last few seasons. The Gabon forward has come up with 64 goals in just over 110 league appearances for the club.
Barcelona are reeling under a lot of debt, which has just been officially revealed that it is more than £1.15 billion, and the club have been only restricted to free transfers while also trying to reduce the wage bill. One of the players on a fat contract is Philippe Coutinho and Barcelona are trying to offload the former Liverpool winger in a bid to lower the wage bill, which stands at almost 95% of the total income.
So far in the summer, the Catalan giants have been restricted to free transfers like Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia, and Memphis Depay. Since coming to Barcelona for around £150 million from Liverpool, Coutinho has failed to settle and he has already been out on loan to Bayern Munich. His contract runs out in the summer of 2023 and freeing him from the wage bill this summer would be a massive boost for the Spanish giants.
Barcelona were also after Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham, who has joined Roma for £34 million after falling out of favour under Thomas Tuchel. Chelsea have a £68 million buyback clause inserted into Abraham’s sale deal.
