Over 2.5 total goals

All three of Turkey’s games and two of Austria’s three group matches featured over 2.5 goals

Austria and Turkey clash at the Leipzig Stadium on Tuesday evening in what promises to be an entertaining Round of 16 contest on 2 July. Can Ralph Rangnick’s impressive Austria see off an adventurous Turkey side? View our expert Euro 2024 betting tips for the fixture below.

Austria vs Turkey prediction: Incident-packed tussle in the works in Leipzig

Key Stats

  • 100% of Turkey’s fixtures and two of Austria’s three group matches produced at least three goals.
  • Austria and Turkey collected a mammoth 26 cards between them in the group stage.
  • Marcel Sabitzer has scored once and is averaging 3.00 shots per game at Euro 2024.
  • Both teams scored in two of Austria’s and two of Turkey’s three group stage games.

Correct score prediction: Austria 3-2 Turkey

Ralph Rangnick’s slick Austrian outfit scored three times in each of their final two games in Group D and they are playing with enough of a swagger to attack in waves against Turkey. The Austrians conceded twice against the Netherlands (3-2) last time out however, and a Turkish side that notched five times across three group assignments should have opportunities to bite back.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Bookies siding with Austria

  • HOME: 9/10 (1.90) – 52.6%
  • DRAW: 12/5 (3.40) – 29.4%
  • AWAY: 10/3 (4.33) – 23.1%

*odds from Ladbrokes, subject to change

Austria have been one of the most entertaining teams at Euro 2024 and their attack-minded approach produced nine goals in their last two group games combined. 9/10 favourites Austria are unlikely to take their foot off the gas against Turkey and another end-to-end contest could develop in Leipzig as a result.

Turkey have blown hot and cold so far, and despite winning twice in three group tests, they lost the xG battle in all but one of their opening assignments. Priced as 10/3 outsiders to succeed on Tuesday, Turkey are competing in the knockouts at the Euros for the first time since 2008. Key duels

Marcel Sabitzer vs Ismail Yuksek

Marcel Sabitzer has become a talismanic figure for Austria and the midfielder’s box-crashing runs have been a major part of their attacking gameplan. Turkey’s Ismail Yuskek, who has been averaging 1.50 tackles per game, could be tasked with tracking Sabtizer’s bursts.

Christoph Baumgartner vs Ferdi Kadiouglu

Austrian wing wizard Baumgartner has been averaging 1.30 dribbles and 1.30 key passes per game on the flank though the 24-year-old will need to be at his best to get past Kadioglu. The Turkish defender has been completing 2.70 tackles and 2.00 interceptions per game at left back.

Phillipp Mwene vs Arda Guler

30-year-old Mwene is an experienced campaign at left-back for Austria, though he might be under the cosh against tricky wonder kid Arda Guler on the flank. The 19-year-old Real Madrid starlet has already scored once at Euro 2024.

Player to watch – Marcel Sabitzer

Marcel Sabitzer is an Austrian footballing icon and he has cemented his cult hero status with a string of top performances at Euro 2024. The 30-year-old has scored only once so far, though he might have had a better tally with a little more luck.

Look out for Sabitzer’s runs

Given licence to roam by Ralph Rangnick, Sabitzer’s line-breaking runs can be lethal and the attacking midfielder is adept at shooting with either foot. Sabitzer had three shots and scored with one against Netherlands in Austria’s last fixture and he could make a similar impact against Turkey.

Winner’s next potential opponents

Austria and Turkey both enter this duel with high hopes and whoever wins will get to play Romania or Netherlands. Both of these teams have a losing H2H record against Netherlands, although in both cases it's pretty close. Meanwhile, Austria have a winning record against Romania, but Turkey have lost to them 14 times so far, along with seven draws and five wins.

If Turkey or Austria can eliminated Romania or, more likely, Netherlands, their potential opponents in the semi-final are England and Switzerland. Finally, if the winner of this duel gets all the way to the final, they will either play the hosts Germany, France, Spain, or Portugal.
