Aston Villa are close to signing former winger Ashley Young on a free transfer from Inter Milan. The former England international has just won the Italian Serie A with Inter Milan, but he would be leaving the Italian club with his contract coming to an end.
The move would see Young once again play at the Villa Park, where he spent four seasons from 2007 to 2011. During this period, Young made more than 150 league appearances for the Midlands outfit and even helped them challenge for a Champions League spot during the 2009-10 campaign.
The availability of Young kick-started a lot of interest from several English clubs. Burnley were very keen on the winger, who can play at left back or further forward, along with Watford, where Young began his career in the 2003-04 season.
However, it appears that Aston Villa have stolen the march ahead of potential suitors. Young is undergoing a medical and he is expected to sign a one-year contract. There will be an option of another 12 months.
The winger has had a very successful career with the majority of his trophies accumulated during his time at Manchester United. After moving to Old Trafford in 2011, Young has been able to win the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup. He was a surprise signing for Inter Milan in January 2020. After his move, though, he helped Inter pick up their first league title in a decade. In the process, Ashley Young joined a small list of English players to have won the Premier League and Italian Serie A titles.
Aston Villa supporters have already had an exciting summer. The club has broken their transfer record to bring in Emi Buendia from Norwich for £35m. Villa then had a £25 million bid for Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe rejected by the Gunners.
