Authenticity (3/5): Insider makes outlandish claim
Arsenal are planning to make a big-money move to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, as Mikel Arteta aims to strengthen his midfield this summer.
The story comes from Football Insider‘s Mick Brown, who remains “very well-connected” within the game, owing to his scouting stints at Manchester United and Sunderland.
Value (2.5/5): Newcastle don't want to sell
The Magpies greatly admire the Brazilian midfielder, who has become a focal point of Eddie Howe's side. As things stand, they intend to keep Guimaraes and plan to price him out of a move should Arsenal make an approach. However, their possible failure to qualify for the Champions League could open doors for a major exit in the summer.
Suitability (4/5): All-action midfielder
Guimaraes is a strong runner in the middle of the park and likes to get into the box and join in attacks. At the same time, the Brazilian loves to do the dirty work, ensuring he is in the right place at the right time to intercept the play or dispossess the opponents.
Upgrade? (4/5): More physicality for Arsenal
Arteta already has one of the most physically dominant midfields in England and the addition of Guimaraes could further strengthen his side. Should the Spaniard decide to continue using Martin Odegaard as the attacking midfielder, Mikel Merino would find himself on the bench next season.
Logic (2.5/5): Player not pushing for an exit
So far Guimaraes has not indicated any desire to leave St James’ Park. As such, Arteta may need to do a lot of convincing to lure the player to the Emirates and at the same time hope Newcastle don't qualify for the Champions League.
Whisper+ verdict: 16/25
Even though the financial situation at Newcastle could force them to consider a major exit in the summer, it's not going to be straightforward for Arsenal to sign Guimaraes.
