After weeks of negotiations, Arsenal have finally been able to secure the signing of Ben White, who has now been signed from Brighton for £50 million. Arsenal have made the England international as the most expensive defensive acquisition so far. Apart from a transfer figure that includes no add-on bonuses, Brighton have also been able to include a sell-on fee, according to Sky Sports.
The 23-year-old has made progress in leaps and bounds over the last few years. He came very close to joining Leeds United on a permanent basis for around £25 million, but Brighton were able to hold onto the player just that additional bit longer to see his transfer value double.
Ben White is seen as someone who will play an integral role in the Arsenal squad. He is seen as a direct replacement for David Luiz, who has now left the club after a couple of years at the Emirates Stadium. The incredible passing abilities of Luiz is something that very few central defenders are able to replicate, but White is among them. Even England boss Gareth Southgate is a huge fan of the defender’s versatility, as White can be deployed in a defensive midfield or full-back positions if the need arises.
Arsenal have been focusing heavily on bringing in White. After an initial bid of £40 million was rejected, the Gunners came back with an improved offer of £47 million which was also rejected. However, the two clubs have now been able to come to terms and White will be undergoing a medical when he comes back from his holidays. White was an influential player in the England squad which reached the European Championship final against Italy.
The next focus for Arsenal will be to retain players like Hector Bellerin, who has indicated a desire to leave the club.
