Arsenal are close to completing the permanent signing of Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid, according to Sky Sports. The Norwegian international is set to complete the switch over the weekend for around £30 million, which could rise by another £4 million depending on performances.
Odegaard was at Arsenal for the second half of the previous campaign. He made 20 appearances for the Gunners after failing to get regular gametime at Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane. Once regarded as the next big thing in world football, Odegaard came to Real Madrid with the huge reputation in 2015 but the teenager always found it difficult to feature alongside the huge names in the squad. This led to several loan moves to the likes of Vitesse Arnhem and Real Sociedad before signing up with Arsenal last season.
After having had a close look at the young star, Mikel Arteta has decided to splash the cash. After having spent big on the likes of Ben White and Albert Sambi Lokonga, Arteta has been backed even further with the signing of Odegaard. The splurge does not stop here, as the Gunners are also close to signing Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United for around £24 million. Ramsdale’s deal is being done at a much faster pace in the hope of including him in the squad for Sunday’s match against Chelsea.
Ramsdale could eventually end up costing over £6 million depending on performances. The 23-year-old has been on Arteta’s radar even before moving to Sheffield United back in 2020. As part of the deal, Bournemouth will receive a 15% fee due to a sell-on clause. As a result of Ramsdale’s arrival, Arsenal are likely to part company with Alex Runarsson.
Arsenal began the campaign in disappointing fashion after losing the opening game 2-0 to Brentford. The game witnessed new signing Ben White come up with an underwhelming performance.
