Arsenal are close to completing the signing of Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid. The highly-rated youngster is expected to join Arsenal on a loan deal till the end of the campaign. The 22-year-old hit the headlines when he switched to Real Madrid in 2015. He was regarded as the ‘next big thing’ in the game and there were even plenty of comparisons to Lionel Messi. Yet, the situation on the ground turned completely difficult for the Norwegian, who struggled to settle the club while shuttling between the first team and reserves.
Still very young in his first few years with Real Madrid, Odegaard was sent out on loan to various clubs in a bid to secure a regular football and improve his game. Yet, none of these loans spells worked out until the move to Real Sociedad last season. After a spectacular comeback that once again reminded people about his abilities, Odegaard would have expected to play more regularly at Real Madrid this season. It has not been the case and he was left out of the squad completely for the Copa del Rey encounter against Alcoyano.
Odegaard’s contract with Madrid runs until 2023 and the upcoming loan move could be one of the last chances for the 22-year-old to persuade the Madrid hierarchy that he deserves a place in the starting line-up at Santiago Bernabeu. The move to Arsenal would come at a time when the Gunners recently parted company with Mesut Ozil by mutually terminating his contract. There will be stiff competition for Odegaard’s signature, as it is expected that Real Sociedad will also be trying to get the player for another loan spell.
Arsenal, though, are favourites according to Sky Sports and a deal could be announced in the next few days. This would be a major positive for Arsenal, who have been on a resurgent run of late.
