10 Ligue 1 players who could be on the move this summer

Ligue 1

There have been plenty of high-profile exits from Ligue 1 in recent times, with Monaco youngster Aurelien Tchouameni the latest to join the list.

The 22-year-old midfielder was wanted by numerous clubs throughout Europe but eventually settled for Real Madrid. He joins fellow midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who moved to the Bernabeu from Ligue 1 this time last year.

And while PSG may have broken the bank to convince star striker Kylian Mbappe to commit his long-term future to the club, there are plenty of other superstars who could exit the capital in the coming months.

Here are 10 Ligue 1 players who could be on the move this summer:

Renato Sanches

Exciting Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches burst onto the scene back in 2015, helping Benfica to a league and cup double, while winning the Golden Boy award for his stunning displays. Bayern Munich then snapped him up before any other European giant could.

But things certainly didn’t go to plan in Germany, with the youngster loaned out to Swansea before being sold permanently to Lille in 2019. Since then, however, he has found a happy home, recently playing a key role as the French side made it to the last 32 of the Europa League.

But now, Serie A-winning AC Milan are keeping a very close eye on the midfielder, so close in fact that he looks set to be announced as their latest summer signing in the coming days.

Sven Botman

Sanches isn’t, however, the only Lille star to be linked with a move away from Ligue 1 this summer. His team-mate Sven Botman is also making the headlines, with the young defender reportedly being monitored by Premier League Newcastle.

The Magpies have already invested heavily in defence under Eddie Howe through Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett, but the boss would like to improve his options at the back further.

Dutch centre-back Botman is attracting much interest across Europe, but the new riches of Newcastle may just persuade him to make a switch to the Magpies, as they look to build on an improving squad.

Ligue 1

Presnel Kimpembe

And another PSG man who could make a summer move is defender Presnel Kimpembe. The 26-year-old was a regular at the heart of the club’s defence last season, having also made a handful of appearances at left-back.

But his future remains up in the air, with the Paris outfit reportedly keen to bring in Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar. His signature would definitely force Kimpembe to rethink his priorities.

Moreover, the latest reports suggest that he is now wanted by Chelsea, with the Blues eager to snap up a like-for-like replacement for the recently departed Antonio Rudiger. There is certainly money to spend at Stamford Bridge, and a chunk of that could be reserved for Kimpembe.

Alberth Elis

Bordeaux forward Alberth Elis is another player attracting interest from the English Premier League. He looks destined to leave his current club, given they suffered relegation to Ligue 2 in the recent campaign.

The Honduras international can leave with his head held high though, having hit the back of the net nine times in the recent Ligue 1 campaign, including a goal against champions PSG.

The 26-year-old is capable of slotting in at right-wing or centre-forward and, according to HITC, is a target for Leeds boss Jesse Marsch as the American looks to strengthen in all areas after a tricky campaign.

Nayef Aguerd

West Ham are another Premier League outfit who are eager to build on their talented squad, and the latest reports suggest that they are looking at Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd. The centre-back made 31 appearances at the back as his club secured a fourth-place finish in Ligue 1.

The Hammers are relaxing after an impressive season but will need to find a handful of players to improve their squad as they seek further European success next time out. With Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen also attracting interest, it looks set to be a hugely important transfer window for the East London side.

Aguerd has impressed for both club and country lately, helping Rennes to the Europa Conference League last 16, and Morocco to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Angel Di Maria

Mbappe’s long-serving team-mate Angel Di Maria is one who is definitely on the move this summer, as his contract in Paris is now up. But whether or not he stays in Ligue 1 remains to be seen. The latest reports, however, suggest that a move to Serie A giants Juventus is on the cards.

The attacker has enjoyed a glittering career at both club and international level, winning several trophies with PSG and Real Madrid, and shining at World Cups with Argentina. He will certainly go down as one of the best wingers to ever play the game.

But the 34-year-old is by no means finished yet, and undoubtedly still possesses the ability to do serious damage in the final third. He didn’t have his most productive season in front of goal last time out, but a switch to the Old Lady may just give him a new lease of life.

Ligue 1

Hugo Ekitike

Given the funds available to Newcastle, the Magpies won’t be too far away from any transfer rumour this summer. But one Ligue 1 player that it is well known they are chasing is Stade de Reims striker Hugo Ekitike.

The 19-year-old was sought after in January but chose to finish the campaign with the Ligue 1 side. He hit 10 goals in the league as his club finished 12th, adding another goal in the cup. The youngster is currently on international duty with France under-20s.

Howe has made it clear that a striker is needed to provide competition for Callum Wilson, and Ekitike is seemingly the player that the manager wants to bring in to fulfil that role. Whether or not they can get the deal done is another matter entirely.

Which other Ligue 1 players could make a summer switch?

With 11 goals and 13 assists in the recent Ligue 1 campaign, Rennes midfielder Benjamin Bourigeaud is also being watched by a handful of European clubs. And again Newcastle could be in the market for Lyon and Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta. Finally, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping a close eye on Monaco centre-back Axel Disasi.
